About the journal
Starinnaya muzyka (Quarterly Journal of Early Music) is a Russian illustrated scholarly journal devoted to musicology.
Founded in 1998, the journal is intended for readers interested in early music and its study, performance, and interpretation today.
Each issue features articles by leading Russian scholars in music history and music theory, as well as contributions by graduate students and degree candidates.
The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on Western and Russian art music from Antiquity to the mid-nineteenth century, together with studies of historically informed performance practice in the modern world. It also includes reviews of newly published books in these fields. Its scope encompasses current issues in historical and theoretical musicology, music aesthetics, music source studies, textual criticism, and performance practice.
The journal was founded by PREST Ltd. Since 20 July 2026, it has been published by the Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory.
